Service Description
Do you want to improve your musicality while strengthening your technique so you can improvise with confidence? Do you ever feel like you 'run out of ideas' when improvising or creating a choreography, or you're not sure which movement fits which rhythm? Do you want to learn the approach to nailing a live drum solo? Then this course is for you! This is not a choreography course, but a training programme packed with combos, technique, musicality theory and practical exercises designed to deepen your understanding of Egyptian music. You'll learn how to interpret both common and less‑common rhythms in oriental and drum solo music, and apply them through targeted drills and dance combinations each week. We begin with a Zoom lecture to learn the rhythms we’ll cover, train the ear, and practice identifying rhythms in oriental and drum solo music. It will be recorded, so don’t worry if you can’t attend live. Syllabus: • Common 4/4 rhythms (maqsoum, masmoudi saghir, saidi, wahda, zaffa etc) • Common 2/4 rhythms (fellahi, malfuf, ayoub etc) • Common 8/4 rhythms (chiftitelli, masmoudi kebir, warda kebir etc) • Other key rhythms (samaii, bambi, zaffa, fox, waltz, rumba masri, khaleegi etc) • Techniques and movement patterns to fit the rhythm and time signature • How to approach a live drum solo - tips and tricks to create a structured, impactful and impromtu duet. Where: Danceworks (studio 1) or join us live on Zoom. The lecture will be held on Zoom only. When: classes at 8:00pm-9.30pm on 31 March, 14, 21, 28 April. Lecture (zoom): 24th March at 7:30pm (TBC) ⸻ Included • 4 x 90 minute classes at Danceworks (also streamed to Zoom and recordings provided) • Demystifying rhythms lecture on Zoom (recording provided) • Course materials pack • Individual corrections in class • Optional homework with feedback • Access to a participant WhatsApp group ⸻ Early-bird price available until March 15th or spots sell out!
